Advent Calendar, Dec. 19 "Conversation With Grandpa"
My father's interview with his Russian, Jewish Grandfather Alexander In 1964, "Nobody hated America"
I especially appreciate the part where Grandpa Marcus describes when he first laid eyes on Grandma Marcus, and decided immediately he wanted to marry her. “She was beautiful…She was actually beautiful.”
”I like you very much,” he said. “Let’s get married.”
Next he says: “So..we dressed her up…and we got married.”
I also love the part where he describes the moon as “down there.”
This was the most popular interview my father ever did. So popular he had cassettes and vinyl records made, and sold them to listeners.
A welcome voyage back in time, to a different America, seen through the eyes of a Russian immigrant, who came here speaking not a word of English, and immediately got all his money stolen, by his uncle!
I hope you enjoy it.
Wonderful.
“I thank God every day that I raised my family in America…”
I wonder how he’d feel about America today?
WOW Celia. Thanks so much for sharing this wonderful insight into your family. These recordings are to be treasured and should be placed among historical documents. I so enjoyed listening. We have a 96 year old friend from Poland that was put in the work camps in Germany. Her stories are stories that die with these people and forgotten history because our schools surely do not teach what they should. But the testimony of these people when captured in a book or recording are to be treasured and protected for eternity.
