What a lovely post, thank you so much. And Granada looks so lovely. I am so pleased you are there, and rather relieved you are out of NYC. I had not known about Lucia until you posted. I think I remember this from last year--but what a lovely choir.
Is this post a satire, '13th' December, Lucia/Lucifer, women wearing White, with Red sashes/Kabala, and candle Light of Lucifer on their heads, Pagan/Roman Catholic origins, etc, this couldn't be more of a Satanic Witch Human Sacrifice Ceremony depiction if it tried. 🙄
It was made clear in the post that Saint Lucia was a Christian Saint who brought light and provisions to Christians in the catacombs of Sicily. Its was also made clear that Sweden is largely Lutheran and that the tradition is infused with pre-Christian solstice elements.
There are "Satanic" things all through the Catholic Church/Vatican etc but would you accuse Catholics of "worshipping Satan?"
The Roman 'Catholics' (Universal/All) were first and foremost Pagan, then they threw in the Persian Diety Mithra, and then the Persian Zoroastrian Three Kings allegedly anointed a baby called Jesus, but as the letter 'J' didn't exist until the 14 hundreds his name wasn't Jesus. Confucous say "Signs and Symbols Rule the World", the Vatican conference hall is built in the shape of a Snakes Head, with a depiction of Demons in the Chaos of Hell at the back, the Pope wears a Kippah for the Jews. The Pope carries a Staff with Snakes on top. The Pope, and the Lucarians in that ceremony, I repeat, wear White, the Pope is depicting Christ who was Ritualy Sacrificed, and the Lucarians because Humans about to be Sacrificed wear white, the Red band signifies Kabala, a Satanic Jewish practice, I repeat, the Light on her head is the light of Lucifer/Satan (the Light Bearer/the Adversary). The Latin etymology of the word Religion means to Tie/to Bind, like before a Human Sacrifice, or just a Cult holding it's followers with Religious Dogma. The Catholic Church lays claim to all the Earth, all Our Property, and when we are Baptised all Our Souls. The Eucharistic is a depiction of the eating of Christs Body, and Drinking his Blood, like in a Satanic Ritual, etc. Sorry to go on, as I clearly know too much about it, you weren't aware, and as such you didn't deserve my comment, but, the Catholic Church is no better than the Paganism it was founded on, in fact it's a lot worse because it hides it, and, what I have so far said about the Roman Catholic Church is nowhere near the worst of it. 🙄
Yes there were a few Italian versions of the song ‘Santa Lucia’ on YouTube. One was with Andrea Bocelli and had Czech lyrics subtitles! He sings the song beautifully.
Our daughters used to dress up in white gowns with headdresses and serve us cinnamon buns in bed on Santa Lucia Day. Thank you for posting these wonderful videos and for providing such a rich history.
There is no apparently about it --was the water absolutely pure before Jesus turned it into wine?
Unlikely.
The key is the sociology of ritual - which is a polite way of saying 'hell is going it alone'.(At least in the CS Lewis sense of hell being a self made place.)
I was gonna post about Kitamori's Pain of God' -best bk on the cross I've éver'come across-and short.
So Sinclair Fergussen - of the Mainstream protestant circles -decried Kitamori's seminal work as 'syncretic'
Kitamora was the pastor of Hiroshima when the bomb was dropped.
His prayers healed ,in japanese culture unthinkable injuries ,long term hyper radioactivity ,and more.
Those who imagine themselves free of syncretism just dont know their blind spots.
That is a lovely song and procession you shared ,CF-
I especially liked the 'most' syncretic one(first mistaken one sent) ,as it was more artless. The italian roots of the later 200 year old one are very civilised and all that - but I prefer the wolfsong background.
Knocking tradition has been - since WW1 a world 'shared routine'.
When you've actually had wolves ,coyotes serenading over hundreds of kiliometres wild camping -shielding , protecting, from 40% rabid bears - each new km having at least 40 more bears ( North of Vancouver ,near Illiwack country)
''civilised '' is not all its cracked up to be.
Also..
for those who forgot the tov ,after calling me shem...(which Bruce Chatwin states in Utz that a rabbi wears a 'shem' to shut down a homunculous on the sabbabth - fatal to forget)
... a little syncretism ,in return.
ABRACADABRA-
It is not widely known that the gibberish incantation of stage magicians and children’s party entertainers probably has Hebrew origins.
Scholars who support the Hebrew etymology say that abracadabra is a corruption of the Hebrew, ebrah k’dabri, meaning “I will create as I speak,” ie that the act of speech will magically create new realities. If this is indeed the derivation, then it would chime with the kabbalistic notion that the words and letters of the Hebrew alphabet have the power to create.
This idea is expressed in the Talmud’s statement about Bezalel, the master builder of the sanctuary, that “Bezalel knew how to combine the letters through which heaven and earth were created” (Berachot, 55a). Bezalel’s creative ability grew out of his insight into the process by which God created the world through combining words and letters. This, in turn, is related to the midrashic theme that the Torah preceded the world and served as its blueprint: “God looked into the Torah and created the world.”
The vulgar popular use of abracadabra as a magic spell may be a faint echo of these exalted ideas.
I was raised Catholic, in a small farming town in the SE corner of SoCA.on the US Mexico border. There were a lot of Mexicans that went to our little Catholic Church. They were and are, far more into the mystical parts of Catholicism. When I was 12 we moved to a bigger town, and went to a Catholic Church with a larger congregation, with more of a mix of white and Mexican people.
I was (and still am) in love with the ‘rituals and mysticism’ of the Catholic Church, and never embraced the ‘dogma’.
I call myself a “Cafeteria Catholic”…a “take what you like and leave the rest” kind of believer. When my Mom was alive I did go to Church on the major holidays and feast days, because my mom sang in the Mission Choir, of Mission San Diego de Alcalá. One of the 21 missions established by Spanish Missionaries in California. Father Junipero Serra founded the Mission in San Diego.
Now I go to Mission San Diego de Alcalá during the week, to pray and light candles for my friends & loved ones, and for our world at large. And when I’m traveling in CA I often go to the other Mission Churches, that are spread up the coast of CA and do the same. 💓🙏🏻🕯️
I thought that that the first video was kind of weird…almost pagan-witch like. I found the 16 year old video on YouTube (that you have here now) and shared it with my progressive Dems family members, who happen to be of Swedish heritage.
Enjoy the season Celia. Thank you for remaining true to who you are: a soul of Light having a human experience. ❤️

Not so much anymore, Celia.
Honestly I do not really care much about the Santa Lucia show right now.
It´s good that you love music but the world is burning, sweet!

No it's just because I love the music, and as explained, get homesick, and like traditions. Please chill.

Think it through.

Apparently I'm pushing Satanic rituals. 😩
Don’t get me started on that. If you have to have a satanic ritual to celebrate, at least have one as beautiful as that one.
Precisely.
Satanism, form, harmony, beauty, not same thing.
I believe Sesame Street said it best, “One of these things is not like the others “.
Don't listen to those voices. Some people just can't bear to be happy or to have a moment of peace.

Well the first video, though it didn’t feel ‘satanic’ per se, it had a ‘weird vibe’ going on (to me).
I worked for a Scandinavian company that we would have a Lucia event every year, but never knew the background so this is great sharing! 💝
I loved this post! Bah humbug to the naysayers!
Yuletide Blessings!
