Truth BarrierAdvent Calendar Dec 9: The Little Drummer Boy
A Rankin Bass Animated Entertainment Masterpiece from 1968
I just thought of a new feature, that starts today, with this post, called “Advent Calendar.”
Our mother Ulla, being Swedish, made sure we had an advent calendar to count down the days in December, and the Swedes of course genuinely mark and celebrate Advent itself, with 4 candles in a candelabra, to be lit each Sunday, (also moss, trolls, buns, etc.)
I was always a bit late with my son’s advent calendar, wanting to find the right one, etc. So in keeping with that tradition, we’ll start our Truth Barrier Advent Calendar today, on Dec 9. It will simply be a “thing” I like and hope you like, on the theme of Christmas, every remaining day in December. I’m shameless, I know, and I hope I am not alienating people of any faith (including Christianity,) but my thought is that we could use comfort and light more than ever in the history of forever.
Also, this was my (Jewish) father Barry’s favorite Christmas song. So it helps me cry.
But also, weren’t these people, Rankin and Bass, absolute animation geniuses? Who else watched this every year growing up? (You can watch the whole movie free on YouTube if you’re in need of a great escape.)
Happy Advent!
I absolutely loved the Rankin & Bass productions. Our family religiously watched this every year, along with Frosty the Snowman (a cartoon), and the big guns - Rudolph the Rednosed Reindeer. And of course The Grinch! So fun growing up with these. A simpler time. Thank you.
I am Jewish and that is also one of my favorite Christmas songs. I think my father was a fan of your father - just a fuzzy memory. Thanks for all your important work. Baby K just mentioned your research on the Highwire.
