Another wonderful selection !! I am amazed by your ability to read us and know just what we are needing at this hour. Thank you so much! I have sung this song in choirs but never knew the back story. And this version is perfection!

Thank you Celia for spreading light into a gloomy world. I know the fog will soon dissipate and the sunshine will once again appear. Patience begets patience.

God bless

How lovely are you Celia. Every day we unwrap another nugget of history and learn a little bit more about our past .thank you. This song is beautiful. It made me cry, but then again, what doesn’t make me weep these days

Humanity is blessed to have been gifted such a beautiful tune and lyric.

There are so many wonderful performances and adaptations.

Here is Bernstein’s NY Phil performance of the Simple Gifts excerpt from Copland’s Appalachian Spring

As a brass player, I’m partial to the arrangement for Wind Ensemble

A reverence for all life, everything a gift from God. Beautiful and profound truth also understood by many other cultures as in Buddhists and first world aboriginal cultures. So needed. Blessed be the Shakers, Elvis included.

Nothing is or ever has been “simple”. Human life can be joyful and rewarding but it can be difficult and full of sorrow. Attempts to remake or reshape human nature the top down by so “enlightened” leaders or “elders” is always doomed to fail. Only by engaging with and embracing the complexity and nuance of existence can we hope to survive and thrive

When i hear this song i appreciate its musicality. The melody is certainly appealing and beautiful. But to me its meaning is sad and dark. Its a funereal dirge, an omen , a warning about the folly of denying human nature

Peace flowing from God our Father & available through the gift of His son ... so simple, yet profound, a child can understand. Blessings.
