Here's why there is an oceanic circulation.
The sun radiates a roughly constant amount of energy into space that is increasing very slowly.
How slowly?
Using the Sagan App, I estimate that:
Increase over 1 million years: Approx. 0.01%
Increase over 100 million years: Approx 1%
All other things being equal, the Earth should be about 3ºC warmer now than it was 100 million years ago. But actually, it's quite a few degrees cooler, because all other things are no equal. Positions of the continents and oceans have changed radically. Mountains have risen and fallen. Atmospheric composition and possibly pressure MAY have changed significantly.
But the basic point is that most of the solar radiation that reaches the Earth's surface does so in the tropics, where it warms the oceans. Warm water tends to rise, but unless it evaporates, it can't rise any higher than the surface of the ocean. Some evaporates, but must just warms up a bit. This makes it less dense, so it spreads out over the surface, moving north and south, displacing cooler denser water as it goes, and conveying heat to the temperate and eventually to the polar regions.
At the same time, not much solar radiation reaches the higher latitudes, so the surface water in the oceans there naturally becomes cooler and denser and sinks into the ocean depths.
Hence solar radiation + the Earth being a ball with 70% of its surface covered in oceans up to 11 km deep and with an average depth of 4 km guarantees that there will be some kind of oceanic circulation. IT CAN'T STOP! IT'S BASIC PHYSICS! YOU CAN TEST IT IN A BATHTUB!
Now, the thermohaline circulation: Google tells me:

But what they don't tell you is that the oceanic circulation will not collapse -- with 100 percent certainty as long as there are oceans and solar radiation. And as long as heat continues to flow from warmer to colder parts of a given medium or material.
Regarding the idea that the thermohaline circulation will collapse (95% certainty), I think it is highly unlikely but it needs to be investigated as a serious possibility by researchers and theorists who get a kick and a salary out of doing that sort of thing.
I think it is important to understand that in the current era, polar ice is melting and running into the oceans every summer in both the northern and southern hemispheres, and to significantly effect the salinity distribution of the water in the polar or high latitude oceans, a significant increase in the rate of summer polar ice melting would need to occur in Greenland and/or Antarctica.
This would in turn cause a significant rise is sea level worldwide. So we would not expect the thermohaline circulation to significantly decrease in the absence of a significant rise in sea level, would we?
What is significant, I hear you ask?
Significant was the 120 m rise in sea level that took place over the space of 12,000 years at the end of the last glacial. That's about a meter every century or 10 mm every year on average.
During the great melt, the most rapid rates of sea level rise occurred during distinct pulses or "meltwater pulses" between 14,500-13,500 years ago and 11,500-9,000 years ago. During these meltwater pulse periods, rates of sea level rise likely reached as high as 40-50 mm per year.
Generally speaking, in my view is that, as is the case in many subjects, if we only consider one factor and ignore all the other potential other factors, it is possible to conduct a doomsday scenario quite easily by varying that factor.
But in a complex system, such as the human body, or the global economy, or a rainforest, or the global ocean/atmosphere system, there are numerous factors at play, and the interplay between them can be subtle and difficult to ascertain.
As always, we need not only more data, but also more accurate data, and we need to consider and explore the effects of potential interactions between different factors.

Diamond and Leah are doing really great work. He's a PhD in geology, so his interests include all things geophysical. And, he's a rational analyst who is able to provide sourced contradiction to all the climate change hysteria. They're also on board with the electric universe theories, ether, Birkeland currents, etc. Prime example of real new age thinking.
I am not sure Diamond has a PhD, but he is one of the best reporters using science as opposed to pseudoscience. He uses actual data, and I am talking about raw data and not sanitized-for-the-masses data. I know you know that, but apparently the audience here is not familiar with them or that practice. I am both a follower of Diamond and Leah, and for longer, the EUT. I trust what Diamond publishes far more than the utter nonsense of the MSM, who uses one qualifier for climate, CO2, for a very complex but not complicated science.

He also has an open, inquisitive mind that allows him to entertain non-mainstream ideas concerning such disparate subjects as cosmology, anthropology, archeology and modern agriculture, examining all with a rational analysis.

I've known PhD's in Geology and other sciences and engineering who couldn't find their way out of a wet paper bag. So, the "fact" (which I've not confirmed) that he has a PhD in Geology, and the further "fact" (assumption, really) that because he has a PhD in Geology that he therefore knows and understands and is interpreting (yes, this is all interpretation that they're doing) the "data" (it's gubmint approved data, and so therefore absolutely suspect) is illogical. It's also illogical to make gigantic assumptions and interpretations such as those two are doing with so little data (and suspect data at that), and is entirely ridiculous. They're making themselves ridiculous.

Here's why there is an oceanic circulation.
The sun radiates a roughly constant amount of energy into space that is increasing very slowly.
How slowly?
Using the Sagan App, I estimate that:
Increase over 1 million years: Approx. 0.01%
Increase over 100 million years: Approx 1%
All other things being equal, the Earth should be about 3ºC warmer now than it was 100 million years ago. But actually, it's quite a few degrees cooler, because all other things are no equal. Positions of the continents and oceans have changed radically. Mountains have risen and fallen. Atmospheric composition and possibly pressure MAY have changed significantly.
But the basic point is that most of the solar radiation that reaches the Earth's surface does so in the tropics, where it warms the oceans. Warm water tends to rise, but unless it evaporates, it can't rise any higher than the surface of the ocean. Some evaporates, but must just warms up a bit. This makes it less dense, so it spreads out over the surface, moving north and south, displacing cooler denser water as it goes, and conveying heat to the temperate and eventually to the polar regions.
At the same time, not much solar radiation reaches the higher latitudes, so the surface water in the oceans there naturally becomes cooler and denser and sinks into the ocean depths.
Hence solar radiation + the Earth being a ball with 70% of its surface covered in oceans up to 11 km deep and with an average depth of 4 km guarantees that there will be some kind of oceanic circulation. IT CAN'T STOP! IT'S BASIC PHYSICS! YOU CAN TEST IT IN A BATHTUB!
Now, the thermohaline circulation: Google tells me:
"What happens when thermohaline circulation stops?
Because of the importance of bottom water in global thermohaline circulation, heat transport to the poles from the equator would decrease if thermohaline circulation slowed or stopped. Polar regions would get colder because they would not be receiving as much heat."

But what they don't tell you is that the oceanic circulation will not collapse -- with 100 percent certainty as long as there are oceans and solar radiation. And as long as heat continues to flow from warmer to colder parts of a given medium or material.
Regarding the idea that the thermohaline circulation will collapse (95% certainty), I think it is highly unlikely but it needs to be investigated as a serious possibility by researchers and theorists who get a kick and a salary out of doing that sort of thing.
I think it is important to understand that in the current era, polar ice is melting and running into the oceans every summer in both the northern and southern hemispheres, and to significantly effect the salinity distribution of the water in the polar or high latitude oceans, a significant increase in the rate of summer polar ice melting would need to occur in Greenland and/or Antarctica.
This would in turn cause a significant rise is sea level worldwide. So we would not expect the thermohaline circulation to significantly decrease in the absence of a significant rise in sea level, would we?
What is significant, I hear you ask?
Significant was the 120 m rise in sea level that took place over the space of 12,000 years at the end of the last glacial. That's about a meter every century or 10 mm every year on average.
During the great melt, the most rapid rates of sea level rise occurred during distinct pulses or "meltwater pulses" between 14,500-13,500 years ago and 11,500-9,000 years ago. During these meltwater pulse periods, rates of sea level rise likely reached as high as 40-50 mm per year.
Generally speaking, in my view is that, as is the case in many subjects, if we only consider one factor and ignore all the other potential other factors, it is possible to conduct a doomsday scenario quite easily by varying that factor.
But in a complex system, such as the human body, or the global economy, or a rainforest, or the global ocean/atmosphere system, there are numerous factors at play, and the interplay between them can be subtle and difficult to ascertain.
As always, we need not only more data, but also more accurate data, and we need to consider and explore the effects of potential interactions between different factors.
