Regarding atheists, there are several senses of the word. Most object to the concepts of "god" that have been pounded into us (by corporate religion) all of our lives. I think many are not commenting on the mysteries of the universe but rather on the attempts to exploit people's trust with false and self-serving notions.

Many who would say they are "atheists" have a spiritual sense, or have faith in the intelligence of nature. There are also humanists, for whom faith in humanity in some form is essential to their reality framework.

I wonder what is going on with those who feel that there is no more to existence available than what we see in ordinary observable reality. However, if one is really paying attention to that, there is quite a lot that defies explanation and understanding. Nobody needs to believe anything as an a priori requirement; being curious and open minded are quite enough to have what you might think of as spiritual experiences that become important teachers.

I've always found those who say they are athiests are really agnostic.... atheism is more a dogma being anti-god after all who can know there is no god except by faith, dogmatic faith

No, atheism is simply an absence of belief in gods. One cannot be against something that they don't believe exists. It's not the case that atheists are undecided whether gods could exist. All of the gods so far proposed are clearly self-contradictory and nonsensical. It's easy to dismiss all of them and add them to the ranks of mythological. Atheists disbelieve in your god in the same way that you disbelieve in all the other gods.

Expand full comment

believing something doesn't exist is a belief or dogma..... asserting that a person is an atheist as I saidis a misnomer as without a faith, belief or dogma a person could only be an agnostic, lacking belief not being committed to a belief

Most atheists do NOT believe or assert that gods don't exist. They simply lack a belief in gods. Claiming that atheism is a belief system is akin to claiming that not collecting stamps is a hobby or that not playing football is a sport. But nice try.

You're confusing knowledge with belief. I suggest you look up the definition of both terms. An atheist does not believe that gods exist whereas an agnostic states they don't know. What you're doing is redefining the terms by stating that an atheist has a belief in the non-existence of gods.

As an atheist, I have been deeply troubled by the ban to attend church services during the past three years. I know that there is much more to existence that what we see in ordinary observable reality. I know that nature has its own amazing intelligence. My prayers have been answered in the past.

There is a lot of wisdom in the Bible. Celia has just mentioned that a man should not try to be God. According to the Bible, when the Antichrist takes power, he will conquer the whole world, joining all governments under his sole authority. I agree that one world government is a really bad thing.... Still, I am an atheist.

Sonja ~ You are a wonderful thinker upon such things which does place you in a bit of a quagmire, owing to your heart and mind and sight! :)

If you were on an operating table and the surgeon opened your heart, there would be no evidence at all of the love you hold deep inside of it. If that same surgeon was to open your skull, there would be no evidence at all of the millions of memories you store neatly inside of your mind. If the surgeon cut into your eyes, there would be no evidence at all of every vision you’ve ever captured throughout your life, yet, I can say with certainty that you do carry love in your heart, you do have stored up memories in your mind and you have seen the world with your eyes, yet, if asked, you can not prove any of it.

When I tell you that I know that there is a God, because His Holy Spirit dwells within me, though I can’t prove it to you, just as I can’t show you what’s in my heart or head or what I’ve seen with my own eyes, I can just tell you the truth, that He is in me and I am in Him.

As you continue to read the chapters in the most published literary documentation known to man, there you will find the source of all wisdom, culminating in what it means to be human and one of God’s children, as it is written In Corinthians 1:13, and that is to love!

So do we all have to apologize for having an opinion? Speak your mind, if others wish to take offence they will do so no matter what. And in the matter of atheism -- a 'true' atheist is someone who is certain there is no higher power or force or God or god, whatever one wishes to call it, which is a position that is as ludicrous as it is unscientific. It is a position of belief. Agnosticism is the humbler and more realistic alternative.

But Stevanovitch, it is a learned skill. You can equal and even best me. Did you know that Lincoln always read a dictionary? And I can wilfully be an ass at times of my own choosing especially with any one of the four women intellectuals in my life as close friends who actually as women go possess the nobler character traits over our male gender. I tend to be sapiosexual, (attracted to intelligent women) and these gals influence my abilities and rough house character to the good. Actually I was invited into their lives as a friend and became a close friend foundationally in relationships built on trust and respect. That is, their minds are my focus, and they love that. I do though on occasion have the dickens hugged out of me by one especially although I hate hugs (LIE!!! - see what I mean by being an ass) but soldier on tolerating them so as to humor these inner and outer women of pristine character excellence that beggars description. One once told me after one of my diatribes vilifying our "Slime" Minister that I was a "terrible man."

That gal has big brown eyes that announce her emotions. To fool her I played like I was sad and downcast. I noted her eyes misting (affection) and she quickly added "but I still cherish you Edward" to which I laughed that triggered her laughter to where I found her in my arms which I hated (BIG LIE AGAIN) ONCE AGAIN. hahaha

A few days later I was dining with another of them and told her of this. She looked at me straight with her piercing blue eyes and said, "You would not have fooled me! " (This then coming from the serial hugging gal who after we dined hugged the dickens out of me several times.)

I have been a fool "de temps en temps" but never more so than when I thought I was doing each of them more good than what I received from their company. In a state of abject emotional confession I told them all I had actually benefited more from their company than what I gave to them by way of encouragement, affectionate words of endearment and the utmost respect. As each of them told me over the short period of our initial interactions, talking at times for five hours straight in my car after going through a TH drive through for coffee and donuts, that they trusted me, my pat response was by saying "gal, do you realize when a woman trusts a man that it is but a short step away from having her love?"

Damn, once again smiles and more dreaded hugs suffered by yours truly, soldier of his own misfortunes. I just cannot win! Boo hoo! hahahahahahaha

But seriously, the closeness of these friendships was established by two things. I deal with women exclusively in my profession and have for decades and discovered they are all the same but all different. Hold your frilled drawers there, it is true and not an oxymoron.

But they are precious, far more so than they are treated, and to realize that, and to behave in a way that demonstrates it clearly, is a sign post to their proffered respect in return, connected to their affections and damn it all, more of those nasty hugs. hahahahaha

I will slide away from my humor now to seriously say that of the four I am close to, three were deserted by their husbands, and one as were the others, was abused much of her life until she found me and we became fast friends. I dare say I cherish each of them more than life, and a bad decision does not mean someone is stupid. In fact, all of these gals have to be in the top 1% of IQ in terms of intellectual prowess. One of them can weaponize her mind and focus on anyone to destroy them verbally. She can be terrifying. Yes you guessed it. She is the serial hugger!

It is 3:17 in the morn now, Sunday, when I leave to drive 50 miles to a real church with real people. I drive deserted backroads, using the time to introspect on my miserable carcass topped with an idea filled head overwhelmed with the insanity of it all. I stop to fuel up at a reservation where gasoline is over fifty cents a gallon cheaper which saves me a minimum of fifteen bucks. I then stop at a TH for refreshments by way of a drive through and then park to further introspect on myself critically for over an hour. Time interval? I leave at five in the morn, hit the reserve at six, hit TH at seven, and drive the rest of the way to church to arrive there an hour early for more introspection in that empty building.

I was raised by a Salvation Army mother, who married a Methodist, and taught to read by use of the Holy Bible. I credit that in a big way as attributable to my reading comprehension and writing abilities. I hate religions as most are man made but the worst religion that ever came from mental rejects was and is dialectic secular humanism aka political correctness aka woke wankerism. Yes it is a state religion. And practitioners have the average IQ of a candy cane and the appeal of a used snot rag.

The church I attend is a non denominational "Bible church" whose minister I sat under in men's Bible study for three months looking to find unscriptural errors as all man made religions are filled with. I found none....nadda. One night he told the class in summing up the state of affairs by saying, "Broken people in a broken world." THAT WAS IT! I knew I had found the right church to attend because that is the Truth. Some reading this have experienced it!

But I digress. I hate this site because nobody gives me a chance to speak/write. hahahahaha Just being an ass again.

The wind initially woke me but has subsided. I am going back to slumber land to have more nightmares of those four women abducting me only to keep me in a secret room to be a hug slave, Oh the horrors!!!

And finally, what an ass I am!!! hahahaha And you all know it.

Yes, over the years I've had a number of conversations with people who claim to be atheist, just as with people who claim to be Christian. The biggest difference is Christians have a central source for information, The Bible. That makes it easier to assess an individual's perspective related to the subject.

As far as I know Atheism has no central point of reference comparable to The Bible. That enables each individual to create their own version of the subject. At least that's the way I see it.

As for myself, I have personally had experiences and know people who have had experiences that clearly show there is more than meets the eye. Example. A stranger shows up in the middle of some kind of crisis:

Before I knew her, my wife was on a horse safari in Kenya in the middle of nowhere. One of the horses started to bloat and fell over. The guides and workers were trying to figure out what to do. Off in the distance, a man on foot was approaching. He got there and assessed the situation. He pulled out a pocket knife and punctured the horse's side and gas came out of it's belly. The horse immediately got up and was fine. They asked him what he was doing walking out in the middle of nowhere and he said he was a missionary heading towards another village. Everyone said, "oh", thanked him and off he went. When he was gone, the main guide said there are no villages around here! No one could exactly remember his features.

I would like some atheist to explain that to us.
