Try as he might, he couldn’t find that paper to reference his first footnote. At that time Mullis had already won his Nobel with the prestige it connotes. He attended a symposium and who should be there but the godfather himself of HIV/AIDS, (the even later) Luc Montagnier. So Mullis buttonholed him and asked point blank, where is this paper Luc, the smoking gun? You should know if anyone does. Luc referred to some paper about baboons, and Mullis said that he had read that paper carefully and it doesn’t have anything to do with his question. Just then Mullis is distracted for a moment, and LM disappears into the crowd.
