Very weird. Doesn’t add up. My bull shit meter is going off.

My bullshit meter went off when it got huge coverage in the alt media and it was all stupid conjecture... How many other journalists are missing and there wasn't such a circle jerk.

It was also odd that it was so hard to figure whether he was a US citizen or not. You would think his close friends would have explained this quickly.

Just found out too that he has a large following as a Men's Right's Activist (MRA) which I got no love for. I did personally hear him say on one of his broadcasts before he disappeared that women who don't reproduce are wastes of space on the planet, and he repeated it a few times so it was no mistake.

It seems odd bc it is odd.

Is there a Jussie motive here?

What is he hiding? Something embarrassing?

Happy to see he’s alive, but not convinced he wasn’t under duress and forced to make this video. Think he’s still in imminent danger. It was similar to a hostage video.

You're right! I didn't think of that.

He sure is being fast and loose with his interviews now, so I have to wonder about that. Why let him talk at all? Something is very fishy.

Yeah, there definitely needs to be some disclosure. Maybe it's all part of clown world after all. This guy has a vibe that has rubbed me the wrong way since well before his disappearance. I could say more about that, but this probably isn't the forum for it.

Walden, I have had similar feelings that I too held back, probably for reasons similar to yours. It's so easy to be destructive and as I say, suspicious is a complex demon. Actually no--awareness is of God, unwarranted suspiciousness is of the devil. I listened to him a fair amount and it was...complex. I learned a lot.

Celia it seems he's had a rather mixed career https://www.businessinsider.com/author/gonzalo-lira and maybe his latest iteration of himself is as an independent war correspondent, but there's something not right about the current picture. I really appreciated his deconstruction of fake propaganda videos, he's a smart guy, but I do wonder about the recent disappear/reappear.

Iteration number 5 or 6?

Yes, he did a very nice interview with Ritter just about 10 days ago, where his ego was appropriately in check. For contrast, this morning's live stream had me swearing at him. And I tuned out. Also, the Alexes have what seems an unwholesome doting, fawning relationship with him that has mystified me for a while. Glad you posted this.

Found out he's a virulent MRA, which explains a lot...

Where can I find more on his MRA activities? Google didn't turn up anything of interest. Thanks.

I don't know. I just saw people talking about it somewhere on some comments thread. They said that he had a large MRA following before he started doing gonzo journalism. I did, however, hear him say that women who don't have kids are wastes of space and shouldn't exist. I was surprised to hear it and repeated it to my friends, which is why I remember. It was probably about a month ago.

I can’t imagine a scenario where the SBU would have let him go, based on everything he has previously stated about them and Ukraine.

He was a high profile American. It stands to reason that the benefits of killing him, would be outweighed by the potential costs.

This is a "hybrid war", meaning that much of it is an information war. Zelensky (a career actor) & his regime (US proxies, by all accounts) are blatantly managing the public image of Ukraine as "democracy under threat". If nothing else, I have a feeling that Gonzalo set up his insurance by pinning that list of "disappeared" people in his Twitter account. I don't follow Twitter, but I did note that Gonzalo has talked many times about people who have been disappeared, with emphasis on those in Ukraine. I am 100% sure that many of the neo-nazi thugs would have been like pigs in manure at the possibility of being let loose on Gonzalo, and bragging about it on social media (as many did, but without the graphic images that would prove their story).

So I am thinking that the SBU would have been in a bind: they would have loved to have kept him in their power & done more, but given the fact that he is not a Ukraine citizen, and had so much support on social media (and I think the Chilean embassy was also making enquiries behind the scenes), it would not have been a good PR stunt. At very least, it would have strengthened Gonzalo's statement that the SBU are brutal thugs, should he have remained disappeared.

As for not being allowed to talk about it, that is pretty standard in many countries, including my own country, Australia. Once charges are laid, it is not permitted to talk about it, whether by the subject or the media, because of concerns about biasing the investigation. Each country is probably a bit different in the exact strictures, but this actually makes them look a bit more like a democracy, in my book.

Scott Ritter reported him as dead. 🤯

Ritter issued a follow-up after that post because it was misunderstood:

A point of clarification—I have no direct evidence that Gonzalo has been killed. I was clear I was referring to “reports emerging” about his demise. But Gonzo said any disappearance of more than 12 hours should be treated as if something bad had happened to him. It’s been five days. If this had been a New York Times reporter disappearing in Russian controlled territory, it would be headline news—especially if a Chechen “hunter killer” team had taken credit for his death. But with Gonzo—silence. Which was the whole purpose of the post: to raise awareness about his disappearance.

Thanks for this…it was on a George Webb thread. Read another tweet that he was captured & can’t leave a certain city.

I started watching and then after 10 minutes stopped watching Scott Ritter in an interview he gave a couple of weeks ago about the war.

Can't remember exactly why but I believe it was his comments on Putin and the Russian tactics in the war.

I know it was dumb enough for me to not bother listening to anything else he has to say about the war.

Excuse me but everything is odd these days. Not losing sleep over this. I'll watch and see how this plays out. I do believe his family resides in the U.S.

He has also been live with Alexander Mercouris and Alex Christoforou on a later Duran broadcast. His arrest doesn't seem to have muted his criticisms of the Ukrainazi regime administered by the NATO puppet in Kiev.

Sorry - who is he?

Internet somewhat famous. I've seen several of his videos, I'm sure others have seen many more than that. He has seemed to be fine. But like Good Citizen I do have some qs. He is a professional in regards to presenting himself on social media. I think he may be part of the calm before the storm. He should rethink if he is as he's on the wrong side in that case. Think Guy McPherson sort of 'enjoy your next few years because they're your last' and 'I would feel sorry for you but I'm one of the lucky ones'.

Oh and he's dying of heart problems apparently. Only 18-24 months left......

Ok I wrote a post yesterday but decided against posting it.

It was essentially about questioning the motives of this guy and the rest of the telegram channels covering the war.

Interesting - how is he doing this without his computer or his phone? Is he using someone else's? Whose?

Gonzalo always recorded his videos in some closed room which could have been anywhere. Therefore I’m wondering if there is any proof that he has ever been in Ukraine?

Expand full comment

Why is everyone so quick to doubt what Gonzalo Lira is saying?

Yes, he has a wife and 2 sons - and said (before he was taken by the SBU) that they were "somewhere far away and safe". He was obviously aware that had they been in Ukraine, they would have been in danger, perhaps more than he himself, and had taken steps to ensure their safety.

I think the SBU must have been under pressure to let him go (while they continue their "investigation") because of the amount of support and concern shown for Gonzalo on social media, and additionally, there seems to have been pressure from the Chilean embassy (Gonzalo having dual Chilean and US citizenship, I understand). It would not look good for Ukraine - supposedly the showpiece of democracy that every western country is cheering for - to disappear someone who had previously set up his insurance by stating that if he disappeared, it would be because he had been taken by SBU or worse.

Maybe I am wrong, but this is as likely as any other hypothesis.

Gonzalo is giving a lot of interviews - but in them, he is saying exactly the same as he was saying earlier. Just perhaps being a bit more careful to be factual, to emphasise that what he says is already in the public domain, and he is expressing concern for Ukrainian young men who will die in this war & saying other perfectly reasonable things that might obviate any perceived bias he might be suspected to have. He doesn't sound like any sort of stooge to me - and I have learned to trust my BS meter.

Yes, there are still many unknowns, especially about what exactly he was accused of, and what will happen next. He has said he is not allowed to leave Kharkov - but again, this is normal for an ongoing criminal investigation (if that is indeed what it is).

I don't think there is anything weird about him being "rattled" - after all, he was taken into custody for a week, and not allowed any outside contact in that time, and presumably aware during that time that he could be progressed to a more unpleasant phase of the SBU process, with his life, liberty and bodily integrity at risk.

There may be a different nationality involved than Ukrainian, and a different three-letter agency than SBU.

Yes. Good point. This has even happened to me. They have very sophisticated frequency weapons.

Protective custody (with conditions attached) would provide a simple explanation. In my mind, entirely conceivable under the circumstances.

Expand full comment

Wouldn't you be rattled, after being taken into custody for a week, having your phone & stuff confiscated, not being allowed even a phone call to anyone in the outside world, and knowing there was a real possibility you might be disappeared forever? His story seems coherent to me, and he does not appear confused. He states - in all of the interviews I have heard from him since he re-emerged - that he was required to agree not to talk about what had happened to him since he was taken into custody. That is not particularly sinister in itself, and he has been consistent in what he had said about it.

There is no need to postulate any sort of hypnotism, or torture. (I would expect him to show more signs of trauma, had he been tortured. But he is as bouncy as ever, talking in exactly the same way about the Ukraine situation as he did before.)
