On a personal note, I can't help but be touched by his sentimental portrait of a people, the tefillin optics notwithstanding. Sadly, innocent people can be used for not-so-innocent ends.

Somehow I feel like I am being manipulated while watching this...perhaps it's the music? or is it that the photos are rather ordinary but I am expected to have an emotional response associated with guilt? Not sure, but it is clear to me that I am withholding judgement when confronted with objects presented as proof of humans being humans in varying degrees of existence because they are always "used" to tell the story of the shooter, not the shootee. -- Jury of one.
I agree that they have a double edge. To be sympathetic toward poverty regardless of culture is in the word of Shakespeare, The Milk of Human Kindness. But to incorporate it into a larger body of work the overriding theme of which is the perennial victims casts aspersions on the original time those photos were taken.
Old pictures in time recreate emotions of and from the past in the same way a return to childhood places creates emotions in a man or woman who lived in that time period.

The wikipedia page says he also worked on microphotography, whis is also very interesting to me. I've come to think that most of histopathology suffers the same problem as astrology: we see what we want to see.
I always wondered why orthodox Jews dress like that even today. I didn't knew the epoch of that dressing style, but it had to be late XIX or early XX century. Probably due to political restrictions on what could they buy and from whom. It seems like they cannot let go of the trauma, so they have attachment to all that. Like frozen in time, living pictures of their ancestors. This art certainly inspires compassion.
It is ironic that many of the 20th century's best minds came from communities like that. They got their freedom, emigrated to America, got educated, got woke, and stopped having kids. There's a moral in that somewhere.
