What is the definition of a cult?
1. : a small religious group that is not part of a larger and more accepted religion and that has beliefs regarded by many people as extreme or dangerous.
“What is the origin of the word cultism?
The term "cult" first appeared in English in 1617, derived from the French culte, meaning "worship" which in turn originated from the Latin word cultus meaning "care, cultivation, worship". The meaning "devotion to a person or thing" is from 1829.”
“Cults are characterized by:2
Absolute authoritarianism without accountability
Zero tolerance for criticism or questions
Lack of meaningful financial disclosure regarding budget
Unreasonable fears about the outside world that often involve evil conspiracies and persecutions
A belief that former followers are always wrong for leaving and there is never a legitimate reason for anyone else to leave
Abuse of members
Records, books, articles, or programs documenting the abuses of the leader or group
Followers feeling they are never able to be “good enough”
A belief that the leader is right at all times
A belief that the leader is the exclusive means of knowing “truth” or giving validation
“Cults are dangerous because they typically rely on deceptive and authoritarian practices to make members dependent on and obedient to the group. Cults often cut members off from other forms of social and financial support and pose both physical and psychological risks to members of the group.1”
Cults are typically hierarchical, that uses formal and informal practices to socialize members. Often, cults work similarly as pyramid schemes and grooms vulnerable people to join through coercion and peer pressure.
”Authoritarian control: Cultism hinges on encouraging maximum dependency. People in the cult must feel incapable of living an individual life outside the norms of the group.”
“Destructive cults always lie to new members about their true intentions, according to Hassan, either through outright untruths or withholding and/or distorting vital information so it appears more tantalizing at first.
“You might think you’re getting a free dinner,” Hassan says, or, as with NXIVM, "you’re learning a self-help technique. You don’t realize that the goal is to get you to sign up for a week course. Then it's a two-week course, a six-month course. And then they want you to divorce your wife, give over your assets, and work for no money.”
