Warms my heart, there is still hope...maybe we can learn something from these dogs? I am saying good bye to my faithful companion of 14yrs on Thursday...

Grieving a dog is such a particularly vivid pain. So sorry it's time for you and this dog. When my son was 8 and we had to suddenly goodbye to the rescue bullmastif girl who had been his guardian and friend since birth, I was devastated. Through my tears - and his- I heard him say: the only thing worse, mom, would be if we never had her here. I wish you gentleness in this time.

Right there with you.

Splenic Mass tumor been with our almost 14 year old pup a year now.

This might be his last week, not sure, but he's not eating right now.

Giving him chicken broth with melted butter via syringe to keep things going as we also double down on FenBen & IVM.

Keeping the faith.

Blessings to you and your loved one/companion.

I hope your beloved pup rallies.

Celia had an article here 1 or 2 years ago about using DMSO and other ingredients (raw egg & celtic salt, believe) for her cat, Jack. It made a difference for him and bought him some more time.

You are doing all you can. As long as you're sure he's not in pain, keep trying.

All the best to you both.

Do you recall if DMSO was ingested or given topically?? Thx

Pretty sure it was ingested with other ingredients. I'll see if I can locate the article.

DMSO NOT injested for this particular application. Don't know if it can be at all. In this case it was used topically. Look into Celia's archive and search for the article "About Lewis, And About Cancer". I mistakenly thought this article was about Celia's other cat, Jack.

I don't know if this article addresses your dog's specific illness but there is another link in the article about other uses of DMSO which may be applicable to your dog's situation.

We have DMSO. I’ll put some on him in the morning. Want to see first what two days of FenBen & IVM affects him. Thx for quick reply.

It can be injected but difficult to get them to swallow it. I use DMSO for so many things including my pets.

Same post for the 10 that liked this post. Update:

I think the switch from just FenBen to the combo FenBen/morning and IVM/evening was too much. He left us for Pet Heaven today. He'll be in a much better place and we enjoyed throughly a full year in our efforts to eradicate the cancer. Likely got to it way too late as it was already well entrenched in his spleen at diagnosis. Best and keep learning and sharing with others. Thank you.

I held my little dachshund a few weeks back when he was euthanized at age 15. Our grown up children came to greet Fabio the day before and requested me not to leave him when the injection is administered. I decided to go a step further and hold him. It was a weird experience and of course an emotional one to say the least. Weird because I could literally feel how life evaporated out of him.

Thank you for staying with your little guy til the end. Too many people turn away from that situation, thinking only of how it affects themselves.

Yes, it's difficult because you're ending your beloved pet's life, but it's a calm, and quick process. Please, folks, put yourself in your dog, or cat's place, especially if you're taking them to a vet. That's a stressful situation for most pets to begin with. Being ill only compounds that stress. You being there the entire time makes it so much better for your dog or cat.

An alternative that may be available in your area is at-home euthanasia. It is performed by licensed vets. It's the ultimate in a comforting, peaceful passing.

Your dog or cat has depended on you for care and attention. Stay with them so the last thing they're aware of is the comfort of your touch and the sound of your loving words.

Those dogs are probably Great Pyrenees. Natural herding dog, pounds of white hair, lovely disposition.

Many people in my area use those dogs to protect and herd cattle and sheep. It is common to see working packs on ranches. And if have garden pest problems, they eat snails and slugs!

in what general area, may I ask ?

as to consuming gastropods in situ- I have enjoyed escargot as a vehicle for butter, garlic and parsley- even licked a PNW banana slug a couple of times (to experience the numbing effect)

but can't imagine chomping on them raw...

I live on a cattle ranch in N Texas. And as for consuming gastropods, you didn’t even mention the yummy goodness of the snail shells. You can hear the dogs crunching merrily for a fair distance.

I hope banana slug licking was a one time thing.

Expand full comment

never thought of consuming the shells- I suppose zinc, etc... as with the other mollusca, i.e. oysters and clams- which I am partial to ( though the shell that I ingest in the case of consuming the former is by default, or faulty shucking thereof)

as to banana slug licking- I admit to engaging in it more than once, the initial time being the exploration- and the subsequent time being a demonstration...!

Ya know, I wuz wonderin' the same myself. And no way to consult the Cat and the fiddle either as their whereabouts are unknown.

The French expat one in that herd, known as McBouf and recognized for her milk of almost human kindness, escaped the clutches of McDonalds upon discovery that she was an aspiring Shakespearean actress. She held no hard feelings against those who trespassed against her, inspiring the phrase: to error is human but to forgive is bovine.

Gifts

When there was a dog, scores of creeks

arranged my days. Hills rolled years away

in afternoons of bloom and wind. Scent,

sight, sound, the pure pleasures worth

losing one's self in, we found, stalking

treasures in semi-arid sun. Prickly pear spines

and porcupine quills poked fun. I felt

a certain guilt on days I couldn't work

a short walk in, as if obliged to manage

both routines. Wildflower meadows,

cottonwood bottoms, all the dump runs between

blur in memory before a looming chill.

I creak and groan now going uphill. I've grown

uncreeked, reticent in my chair and missing

the old girl's prompts and pleas. She sleeps

there, under those raspberries, at the corner

of the lawn. Wants and needs I variably met

are gifts from her I treasure yet.

Wonderful photo. But how do we know where the dogs are leading the cattle? Maybe we need to look at the bigger picture? Sometimes I feel like we are the cattle and Trump is the dog (or dogs) and I'm not sure it's a good place we're going?

One thing in particular I admire about animals: They don't use use the Linnaeus binomial naming of species to categorize life into species the way we do. For them there a living beings and non-living things.

Hmm?

Write down the word "god" on a piece of paper.

Now go look at the word in the mirror (image).

Double Hmm.
