Whenever someone speaks favorably of Athenian Democracy I remember the arguments of Benjamin Constant against the collective political freedom of the old world, and speaking in favor of the individual political freedom of the modern world. Some anarchists believe only in collective political freedom, and they tend to eschew the common practice of the division of labor. Other anarchists focus more in developing strength so that the collective forces itself to respect the rights of the individual. This sounds too good to be true, but it has happened. It's the most salvageable aspect of modernity.
There is still "freedom of religion" in the West, which means at the very least that people cannot be killed or imprisoned or stolen from or deported for the crime of becoming apostates. This, and the possibility of coming back to religion, which was already a feature of most religions, is now in danger because of the plague of rampant socialism and nationalism, which are probably just two mass manipulation techniques of the plutocrats, who are the main enemies of any political freedom.
I can see that reconstruction of freedom can mean downsizing and even rejecting many technologies (all petroleum derived additives in food, for example,) and it's clear to me that many forms of anarchism require poverty and abnegation, sacrifice for the city, as in old democracy and even in the Platonic city of Justice. But this is not real political freedom.
Anarchism today requires technology and cheap electricity, and an even more extreme division of labor. One function of political regulation of the labor market is precisely to prevent further division of labor. But I'm rambling now. Sorry.
In a nutshell: the old stuff is interesting but it's great that there is no way back to that, and there are only ways forward. Novelty can be good to restore political freedom.
