Pushkin (The Resilient Rooster) Needs A Forever Home

For those of you who may have chickens—I’m seeking a new home for our rooster, Pushkin.

Doug’s house will go on the market later this week to be sold, and he, Simba and Misty will be moving to a (truly amazing) assisted living place in New Hartford.

Lewis and I are going to head south. I should perhaps explain that we will be in our car for many weeks, so have no chance of bringing him along.

We’re looking for a new home for Pushkin the rooster anywhere in New England or NY (or NJ) (We’re in Granby, CT.)

If we find no suitable home for him, we will find a way to bring him, maybe to find his forever home on the road. Roosters are great protectors of the flock. They let out special cries when predators come, and the hens believe them, and retreat to safety.

Pushkin’s History

I was looking on Craigslist for something else a few months ago when I saw an ad for a rooster who was being bullied and hen-pecked by three hens in a cage, whom he had been purchased to mate with. I drove off to buy him, brought him back here, and he has lived a very happy life. By day he dashes around the property, finds worms, chases birds and squirrels; Like clockwork, he goes into the garage each evening at dusk, where his night house is. It’s a large dog kennel, and he sleeps on the cloth covered roof of it. In the morning, he gets let out again. He doesn’t crow until late morning usually. He is some kind of bloodline rooster, I was told, but I don’t know what kind. He has one feather out of place after he was attacked by a hawk, but a neighbor intervened and he prevailed! He is probably about one year old, but I am not sure.

He has not lived with other chickens, since we got him, as we have none, but I assume he would be very happy and able to integrate into a flock.
