UPDATE: We found Pushkin a LOCAL home, with a friend of Doug's, and it looks good. It could still (life being life) fall through in which case I'll email directly those who reached out to Doug's email address. I feel bad for those friends here who were ready to take him and I was not able to make it happen. But I feel we all became Team Pushkin and he can feel it, and I know he is as thankful as I am! hugs and thanks all around xoxoxox Celia

There is a ministry that rescues all kinds of animals called The Ark of Grace and they are in Hopewell Junction, NY. The owners are wonderful Christians and she (Amanda Grace) has a telegram channel, a YT channel and a Facebook page . You would never have to worry about Pushkin at their place.

It is called Arkofgraceministries.org. Good luck with your move and all the adjustments. Always looking forward to your emails!

Pushkin is a lovely guy. If you run out of options, contact Arthur’s Acres Sanctuary. They get tons of requests but may take him in, or temporarily and help look for hopefully, his forever next home. 🙏🏼❤️https://www.arthursacresanimalsanctuary.org/?fs=e&s=cl

Great looking bird. I remember when you wrote about getting Pushkin, under such unlikely circumstances. You're a good egg, Celia, and, as a resident of Torrington, I feel sad you're leaving Ct to head south. I never realized we're neighbors. For some reason, I thought you were living over the line in NYS/Hudson Valley somewhere. We have 6 horses, 16 ducks, 5 feral pigeons, 5 dogs and 3 cats. No chickens anymore, though. I'd love to take Pushkin, but my wife would probably object. We're right bordering the state forest, and chickens disappear in a hurry here. Keep us posted, please.

My stepmother is in Torrington at a nursing home and I am there regularly. I'm fascinated by Torrington.btw I have been living in HV on and off also, since 2020. Crazy few years!

Your 5 dogs don't keep the varmints at bay? Really?

I hope you also find a home (albeit temporary if that’s what happens) for you and Lewis to land in. 🙏🏼💗

I pray you find a good home for him. He's a very handsome guy!

Ship him to me in Michigan, Celia! He’s gorgeous! I have one rooster now and 7 hens.

Cynthia, I will look into rooster shipping. Is it safe? I guess it is! Are you serious that you could take him? Send an email to dog87leonard@aol.com and I will call you. And thank you! And you can still change your mind, of course. But let's discuss!

I SERIOUSLY doubt anyone can safely ship a (live) solitary rooster like that. Day-old chicks can be shipped--in groups--because they don't eat or drink for their first 2 days, & have each other for warmth/moral support. MAJOR chicken abuse, IMHO. If you happen to be driving to northern Maine, we could add him to our little flock, but it seems like there's gotta be someone closer....

I sent your request to some friends with a farm in upstate NY, I don't know how it works if they already have a rooster in hand if it could work, but had to make the effort for poor Pushkin as I'm sure he will be sad to leave your care.

My sister lives in Louisiana & her chickens & rooster are her children. Although she does have 3 ☺️ Last week a roaming pit bull got into her yard and attacked the hens! Of course the rooster try their hardest to defend the girls to the end. There were remarkably no chicken loss. Though the roosters fought hard & attacked the dog trying to lead the dog away from the chickens, the number 1 rooster fought until it literally collapsed and died! The number 2 rooster tried his hardest to seek revenge for its older buddy death and it gave everything & then some! Number 2 rooster did not die but was left traumatized & blind. My sister rushed him to the vet but he had internal bleeding and could not be saved so he had to do the humane thing to do by putting him to sleep. She took him back home and buried him next to his older buddy. This was so horrific not only for the roosters & hens but for my sister too! Absolutely heartbreaking! If you are by chance heading to Louisiana drop me a line here pretty darn sure there’s a wonderful place for him to spend his days with the girls! They were free roaming but no more. But they do have a huge enclosed indoor / outdoor physicality that’s probably better than my own home. 🥰

Rea what a harrowing heartbreaking tale. I had to fight back tears, reading it. But it proves that roosters are totally heroic and self sacrificing, totally intact male behavior. They die defending the females and the young. How about that? I love roosters!

My sister & I literally are just talking about Pushkin! I was telling her your story & about your handsome rooster. I sent her his pic and she freaked out! Apparently he looks just like her “Moe” that died in battle that she loved dearly! How crazy is that huh? She’s a very long way off from your location. Is it even possible that he get to Louisiana or... no. Too far. She’s in St. Francisville, Louisiana.

I don't yet know about how far he could go but I suppose if we had to we could put him somewhere with a friend until perhaps I could drive him wherever his new forever home is. I so appreciate how hard everybody is trying to help us! And Pushkin. <3
