Your father must have been incredibly proud of you. Thanks for sharing this and for this evening’s little rabbit hole. Much respect.

My dearest Celia

I cannot tell you how much I value your advent calendar posts. This one, as all the others, is heart warming and so very human .... something sorely lacking of late. Thank you once again for taking this effort to brighten a season that is to be full of hope and light ..... For You have brought both

Here's an idea I've had which I don't quite know how to make work. Maybe somebody reading here will see better how to do it and I can become their customer.

We form groups locally, people who will run into each other during the week. We negociate a deal with a telephone operator to get a quantity of cell phone contracts all in the name of the created entity. We get a device made, perhaps raspberry pi could do it already. The device has wifi and gsm (cell phone communication). It also has the software to choose instantly whether a connection will pass "normally" or via a vpn. The device detects when another such device is near and the two people carrying them can switch these inexpensive simple devices. The goal is to make it more difficult for our enemy, the owners of our government, to track and trace us. It could be set up to download your personalized config (wifi parameters et cetera) onto you "new" device instantly.

The device, designed by us could actually be turned OFF and really be off. We'd need to "root" our cell phones to make them really be disconnected from the gsm network rather than to only lie and say it's so.

I believe that "airplane mode" is a lie. We push that button and we can't communicate, but our cell phone is still tattling on us to the owners of the government. If you want to see if your phone is doing that, turn it off and see how quickly the batter discharges. My laptop battery will still be over 90% after a month.

For it to do the best job of avoiding the track and trace, it could be programmed to come on periodically and then on period could be synchronized with the on period of people you want to be in touch with.

Can people live with having communications which are not instantaneous but might need to wait 10 minutes? Well if it's somebody you talk to all the time, you could change that period to whatever you'd want.

Eventually we could integrate people's fiber boxes into the circuit to share even less info with our enemy.

So, anybody like the idea? It's free for the taking.

What a rich, rich blessing! You have a wonderful heritage. Your father’s voice and accent brings back memories of my own childhood in the 60’s. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

we have similar backgrounds. My grandparents came from the same places at the same time, your father was the "talent" on the radio, my father was technician at the radio station. now you're a journalist and I'm an ISP. I guess we were both quite influenced by our fathers.

Celia, this was beautiful to listen to — what a heritage you have here!! Thanks so much for letting us know about it.

Kind of off topic, but I’ve long observed in many of the happiest marriages, the man often knows right away — at first sight, even — that he wants to marry someone. (Harry Truman knew in grade school that he wanted to marry Bess, for example). We women like to take our time and evaluate... The man I was happily married to (until he passed away) for a third of a century craned his neck like a little boy to look at me when we first met — he somehow “knew” right away! Your great grandfather “knew” right away... I loved hearing his voice as he talked about her.

I’ve sort of given up on dating, but if I ever decide to dive back in, I would never waste my time with a man who wasn’t “taken” with me on first sight. Women who chase after men are missing this crucial biological difference between men and women, in my view.
