I have often told children the story of Sampo Lappelill. A profound story of courage and trust and the necessity of confronting the dark, frozen forces of control and death - not an inappropriate tale for our times. And the little boy who dares is - so young and seemingly alone.
I see there was a Swedish film made of it in 1949.
On another tack, I was wryly delighted to discover in my exploration of things reindeer that only the females have antlers at Christmas time. So Rudolf that kitsch reindeer was gender confused already many decades ago.
This puts me in mind of a 2019 film someone recommended, Midsommar, which was quite oddly riveting (though it kind of unraveled at the end), about a strange religious cult out in the charming icy wastes of Norway.
Thank you so much for sharing this! Having recently read 'Sand Talk', where Tyson Yunkaporta mentions 'yarning with Sami people', this is a particularly intriguing film to watch. Such a harsh life! (we live on a Quinta in Portugal, where our neighbour is a shepherd, and people are talking about weather and its challenges all the time — what weather challenges?!) The deep connection of the reindeer herders with their animals and landscape is very tangible.
Fascinating documentary. The herd submits to the Sami despite their greater size, power and numbers, much like sheeple submit to their overlords. The admirable Sami are however mostly wild and free. Thanks!
My ancestry is mostly with the Sami fishermen in Inari, with some Norwegians intermarried...
So interesting! Thank you for this link, Celia.

What a treasure. I wonder how many herders are left...
