Excellent selection ! I've already been playing cantatas for a few days.
Nothing says music from the heavens quite like J.S. Bach. For years his Magnificat has been a personal seasonal favorite. Sublime in every way, it harkens me back to the household of my parents. I still own my Dad's classical music L.P.s collection.
Thank you for this great performance. Chaconne and Christmas Oratorio are my Bach faves. But Magnificat comes close, preceded by fascinating sermon on Lutherans, Jews and the Magnificat at 16:00
i survived an interminable and drama-packed road trip (don't ask) to see the bach choir of bethlehem, pennsylvania do this - largely descendants from the composer's home turf - splendid
john eliot gardiner's versions of the st. matthew passion and (especially) st. john passion are fantastic as well
The first time I heard this, I was in my car driving home late one evening. As soon as I got home, I phoned the radio station to find out what they were playing. The man I spoke with said they always got calls from people, when they played it. Just thought you might like it...
No one else's Bach has been sent into space - wonder why not?
How would anyone wish to emulate the definate article?

Mind you Phillipe Hirshorn used full bows on each Bach unaccompanied fuga 8th note - whether concave/convex ( rounded bridge ) 3 or 4 string clusters.Never figured it out ,even after 5 years post grad with him.S'pose the fact he was in the world top 10 players till his death irritated him.
It made a change from his uncanny 'non cerebral' paganini 1st caprice while doing full, alternate (gymnastic) pistolets. Slow motion kossak dance- no hands on ground ,possibility even exchanged for bowing a plummy repetitive drum stroke for 2 and a half mins -violin exactly ,calmly horizontal...
Imagine being seated on each alternate heel ,per bar ,without warm up -alternate leg stretched horizontally straight- repeated ,slow for 2 mins 45 secs. No shaking or rebalancing.
Now at 35yrs , imagine a hastily grabbed bow and violin from a student.Midwinter.
Slow ,like Guca's (Slivovic) over ripe plums falling and exploding on your face ,while admiring the clouds on sunny slopes of Cacack ,2 and a half minutes.
No 'rich man in his castle ,no poor man at his gate -God made them high and lowly-and ordered their estate.' (all things bright and beautiful 'feudalistic ' hymn words) at all.
The Bach from ex soviets is essentially forbidden fruit.
The Elliot Gardner's,Harencourts , even Richters of this world are quite quickly forgotten. They are propagators of feudalism*,but the astonishing interpretations from the forgotten tree of life ,these are things the west relishes ,but has no tradition on. Autodidact soviet pianist Richter touched lightly on this ..Stalin forbade Bach - which is why it was played at his funeral.
Bach meant his music not as polished article ,but expression of his fondness for hitting those who disagreed with him.
Imprisonment was not alien to his sound ,or ideal,or life.
Nathan Milstein was a tremendous Bach Exponent- but he could be found , ravagedly pointing to his forthcoming concert posters ,on the street in Vienna laughing hysterically.

Tuning in orchestras has gone up in ways Bach would have never been consulted upon.
The issue of tuning is never approached honestly by Elliot Gardner ,who bashes on at tempered (half tone tuning) ,and Harencourt.

Here's Harnoncourt conducting again. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=41blIyHQ0hs
And the same piece again a bit more up-tempo and with an equally enthusiastic conductor. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s9UYuBxxqS8

ah. very interesting.
A bit over my head but I will read it and second and third time to let it penetrate.
Gould was equally opinionated as he was an authority on Bach.
I recall reading long ago that he thought Mozart was pedestrian, maybe even loathsome.
Those crazy ass eccentric musicians. All I can do is shut u and listen :-- )
