I'm a free subscriber, and I'm so thankful that I can access your articles without paying. I just can't afford it. I follow Meryl Nass, John Roppoport, Tom Renz, Peggy Hall, Dr. Malone, etc. and I couldn't pay for all of them. However, if I had to choose one, it would definitely be yours. But I want to thank you for making it available to all of us. You are wonderful Celia. Hopefully, when my divorce gets finalized, and I get on my feet in this crazy, upside-down economy, I'll be able to contribute. God bless.
Celia, I love your posts. My problem is If I have to pay for all the substack posters that I follow, Taibi, Greenwald, Rappaport, Emerald and a host of others, I will go broke.
Also, If I am to actually read not skim, the many posts that come into my mailbox each day from all the above, my time will be completely consumed . Anytime you don't see me pop up in comment, thats probably way.
I haven't had any problems with my cc. Only get charged once per month. Please, don't put anything behind a paywall. I appreciate the fact that you don't. Not everyone can afford even 5 bucks a month. We all need to hear you. Thanks, Celia. If you ever come to Sacramento, you have a home!
First, thank you and the other substackers that do not have a paywall. I subscribe to some for free, and pay for others, and I just became a paid subscriber of yours.
Second, the failed CCs could be something as mundane as a card that has been reissued with a new expiration date. I've had that happen a few times in the past.
I got messages for a while on all my Substack accounts that the card was expiring. Wasn't true and payments still went through anyway. No unauthorized charges to date. Times being difficult for everyone, I can respect the paywall. I'm paying to support you, not really motivated by getting "special privileges."
As a paid subscriber I’ve never even thought about content availability, paywalls, etc. I contribute to support you because I get so much nourishment from your writing and the writings of those who comment. I would love podcasts and/or videos as hearing you speak, seeing you, adds such depth. I support you doing whatever you need to do paywall or not. Also love your writing being available to all. One thing I would wish for is that you would be able to have subscriber emails in case substack ever goes down. Is there a way for us to send email addresses to you? Would you even want that or is that too much? I will check my statements to see if billing has been correct. Blessings on your day!
Dear Celia, I am a free subscriber because I simply cannot afford any subscription. This is not a place I like. Your writing has been very helpful, I always look forward to it. Were you to put some content behind a pay wall, I would miss it and miss it and miss it. Often it's the little things you write, the inbetween things, that help me so much. To watch as someone else copes with the current situation. It helps me find my way. Thank you!!!
Well I won't be getting billed again until 17-Aug for your subscription. Last I checked it was just the one that I expected. No new activity recently.
I subscribe because I like your unique style and content. I hope to encourage that sort of thing and expand it. So, whether or not you have anything paywalled does not bother me. I think it would bother me if you had too much paywalled. You're doing just fine AFAIK.
As a senior surviving on a fixed income l am a free subscriber for the time being. And l do deeply appreciate your Substack!
But you mentioned some free subscribers are being charged on their credit card....that would theoretically be impossible as Substack doesn't ask for one's credit card # when one subscribes for free.
So it would only be paying subscribers that need be concerned of any glitches in payments.
And, if at all possible, please keep all your articles free. I do understand you may need to keep podcasts behind a paywall but l hope you can continue to provide your articles for free as the information you provide is so important. Thank-you for all you do!
I am a paid subscriber. As long as I get your posts in my inbox I don't care who pays and who doesn't. None of my business. Since I am a paid subscriber, how do I check my "account"? I haven't had any notice from CC. Don't know when subscription is up for renewal. I care only to support your amazing, enlightening and from-your-true-heart work that is helping me to stay grounded in reality.
When you're visiting Celia's substack, click the menu button on the upper right of the page (three horizontal lines) and a menu will drop down. Select "manage subscription" and it will show you all the details that can be found. I had to (re-) figure that out this morning! 😁
I am free subscriber and I am so glad to hear there are enough paid subscribers to help you. Very thankful for being able to post comments. Some Substack writers only allow paid subscribers to comment. I find this a shortsighted tactic, since I like reading thoughtful comments as much as I like reading the original article. I’ve been unsubscribing from those.
I cannot afford paying for all those to whom I am subscribed, but would love to pay a reasonable sum for an aggregate subscription. Substack should offer this option. While you would not be getting a full subscription, you’d be getting a portion of some sum, which could perhaps add you are currently getting. I would hope that those who are supporting now you would continue do so in the current fashion.
I also believe Substack has a large crosshairs on it.
I'm a paid subscriber and I'm happy to contribute. I have just enough to support a handful of writers and journalists on and off Substack, but not enough to support everyone I read. I know many are in the same boat who have limited means so please keep your Substack open for everyone. There are some prominent names in this space who don't keep their stack open, and I think that's a mistake..
I have always kept all posts free to all and always will as well as all comments etc. I am considering adding a podcast and it is likely I will also keep that free, ie continue with no paywall even for address features. Nobody likes paywalls.
If you have to have a paywall for podcasts in order to stay in the black, then that's the way it will have to be, because you shouldn't ever go into the red...not for the amount of love you put into this substack. However, as finally one of your subscribers now, I can definitely state that I don't at all mind there being free subscribers. I don't ever even think about that (-:
Free subscriber here. Australian government pensioner. Grow about 25% of my nutritional needs. Spare cash goes to buying farm tools. I bought an electric log splitter last month as winter is coming....
After exchange rate and bank forex fees a USD SubStack sub is almost double in A$.
Thank you to all you generous ‘paying it forwarders’ in supporting Celia. Such a wholesome thing you are doing.
And thank you for your contribution that provides this spry, vax-free 70 year old to play in the unfolding conversation.
Same here Watersnake. After the Dec 2021 mandates here (Qld) my pension is the only income I have. Discovering SS has improved my mental state and keeps me going. I do feel guilty for consuming so much of others intellectuall output for free (being able to comment is a wonderful bonus)
but right now I have no choice. Tried to support ausie SStackers and noticed afterwards the cost after the exchange rate, of course should've know it being US based. Every now and then I just have to buy someone "a ko-fi" to ease the guilt. LoL Best to you 🙂
I am a paying subscriber. I hate paywalls. We are in a crisis, so all your posts should be accessible to all.
I’m a paid subscriber. No problems regarding my payment.
If you can, no firewall! The more people that see your writings, the better!

As for me, I just love being able to help you and get your writings.

Ditto -- to everything you wrote. Ditto!
Double ditto.

Great picture of your cat.
Oh, and most of the commenters also contribute a great deal to the conversation.

I think you want to keep all posts free, Celia.
Like a magazine or newspaper one can find on a bus or subway left behind, free.
In times past.
I never bought a newspaper with my own money except for the housemate....
