I did it the hard way with 0 experience in the subject: backed up my docs etc to a 1 TB external drive; burned my own Linux boot USB; installed Linux Mint over my Windows system; installed the programs on Linux i wanted (unlike windows, most Linux distributions have little or no bloatware); and gave my 12 years old laptop a new life! And I'm a tech clutz!
I'll reply back with a Mint installation guide later (I found some helpful stuff in my searches 4 years ago and saved all the documents on my backup drive) as that's the only distro I'm familiar with, but you can consider the various distributions yourself and choose one to your liking.
EDIT: the easy way is visit a tech shop, ask them to make you a Linux Boot Drive (128, 256, 512 GB USB recommended with write capability) with the distro of your choice.
Then you change your Win BIOS setting to #1 Boot from USB; #2 Boot from HD (Windows). Plug in the USB, reboot and your on linux with no other install required. Unplug the usb and reboot to use win.
Once you find out how good Linux is, you can then use the USB boot drive to wipe Win later.
You might try downloading Pop!_OS from the System 76 website. It is a very nice OS that is fairly easy to learn. I started about 6 years ago with Linux Mint and then moved to pop-os. These might be the easiest to try. Check out Itsfoss.com for tips on using Linux.
Just remember, not all Linux apps have identical functionality to their Windows counterparts, and you can always install Windows apps you might still need (for me this was some Bible apps I used) through the Linux WINE (Windows Emulator) app.
Lenovo makes nice laptops with Linux Ubuntu already installed and ready to go. But I recommend what I did, just download the latest version of Linux Mint Cinnamon and install it yourself. Ubuntu is not fully open software. I prefer Debian.
Ubuntu became overweight and a pain years ago. Only no systemd Linux is the way to go.

Microsoft users are constantly under surveillance and have no privacy. Its a closed end system and that means you cannot know what goes on inside the software. It's the same with apple and the goog. With Linux, which is open ended, you can actually see what is coded.

As to Linux one bas to choose a 100% open software platform like Debian. Not all Linux are 100% open.
Many people (I'm particularly thinking of Mike Rivero at Whatreallyhappened.com) have been warning about this sort of event for years. I'm not tech savvy enough to make a meaningful comment but apparently there is some issue with too many networks tied together lacking redundancy and/or alternative hubs or routes. Sort of like putting a Corvette chassis over a Model T frame and engine and then wondering why the whole thing fell apart when you stepped on the accelerator and tried to go 100 mph.
