Maddow was wearing these round glasses evocative of Mao’s and it occurred to me, she’s tickled to sit in front of a large audience with Chairman Mao glasses, the same way a serial killer fancies himself smarter than the detectives he taunts.
Well, the way into the joke is that the song they inserted is Love Story--theme from the movie! That's the Taking the Piss part. But it works exceptionally well because of their faces and fawning. I thought there was something hinky with the camera angles and wondered if those had been manipulated but regardless the looks are real.
This is why I don’t watch TV anymore. It’s seriously fucked up (as we British also say). Ironically the last thing we watched on TV was the 2012 opening ceremony. If Harry Potter isn’t a trauma-based mind control operation then I don’t know what is.
We also need to remember there’s a camera guy and a director involved in this totally creepy shit. It’s often the unspoken element, the subtext (created by the reader/viewer, cf. narrative theory) that’s more important. So while we’re getting distracted by Zelensky’s mawkish puppy dog eyes shit and that woman’s, well, I don’t know what it is, but she’s far too intimate (again, that’s the director for you). Taking a long hard break from watching TV is highly recommended. When you come back to it and watch little clips from time to time you suddenly find yourself understanding the mechanism a whole lot better.
