I don't know. in 1999 while the fine points were still being finessed, I was an avid listener to LBC radio (London Broadcasting Company)--I listened to the Clive Bull show. 25 years later I still remember the scores of indignant callers who were deeply opposed to the EU. They were suspicious and wanted no part of it. I also remember encountering people in Amsterdam who were deeply opposed to it. As an American I was slightly baffled as to how exactly this was all coming together without the seeming support of the people. I understood that it was essentially a bureaucratic maneuver. Everyone laughed and worried about the fact that they were unable to come up with a Constitution. To me it felt like the idea of the EU was an unstoppable juggernaut. I recently watched some old movie that made reference to what was clearly the seeds of the EU--and the movie was from the late 40s. I agree that it is easier to see now; but there were plenty of indications at the time that I should have been far more alert to.
Well, the EU is definitely a dictatorship, and they are doing everything they can to stomp out dissent. But I don't know that I trust this Pavel Durov guy, just like I don't think that I trust Elon Musk. I'm also not sure that Telegram is as encrypted and secure as people probably assume.
