I read a book called The Nature of Animal Healing by Dr. Marty Goldstein about 15 years ago and he exposed all of this. I was so disgusted when I read that all the euthanized animals from vet's offices and zoos are cooked up in Purina dog food; I remember that was the worst brand. That's when I started feeding my dogs raw meat and some veggies. He retired from his clinic, but they still do phone consults and saved my dog's life from 2000 miles away, properly diagnosing her with Lyme disease. Not a single vet in southern Oregon could figure out what was wrong with her. He also talks about how cancer became so much more prevalent when they started over-vaxxing dogs. I believe one vax is over vaxxing, but I think in order to keep his license, he said one Rabies was ok.
*eta Smith Ridge Veterinary in NY. Dr. Jenna Lenarz helped me; beautiful human being.
Carol, I too read that book years ago. Love Dr. Marty. It was a wealth of info. I’ve been feeding my 17 year old cats (now only 1😞) raw chicken and turkey sliders (Small Batch is the brand I use) with a tsp of pumpkin pretty much their whole lives. They are indoors and have never been vaccinated. When I adopted one of my cats from a shelter, of course he was getting kibble. His coat was thin and wiry, bad breath and diarrhea. Within 3 weeks, he transformed into a beautiful happy healthy cat. He did have acupuncture for few weeks and I’m sure that helped restore his health too. Thanks Celia for calling attention to this.
That is so amazing; such a lucky kitty to have been adopted by you! Acupuncture was wonderful for our dog who had the Lyme. She had some limping with the spirochetes moving around and it was resolved with acupuncture.
Thank you! Glad you recovered! So many ways to heal. It's crazy that the majority of people opt for standard western medicine. So blessed to know better! ♥
thank you ! we have a non - vaxxing vet but I will keep your hint just in case ! my dog does get some cans but mostly lamb meat. Otherwise she eats from the table, as pets should do. Unfortunately Purina has a good name. So sad.
Awesome! Dr. Marty's book is great to have for minor pet emergencies. You can still find it used on ebay. I think he sells some sort of raw pet food now. I always knew in my heart that kibble was like potato chips for dogs. Even though I bought a "good" kibble, it was still kibble. It's amazing how excited they get every single time for their food with the raw meat. Never ever had that level of jumping up and down for kibble. Cheers, Carol ♥
we live close to a plant where they make kibble. No need to tell you the smell !I have an old book from Amy Shojai and the prevention pet team. Also lots of tips from animal owners, vet aids etc. My dog has somewhat of a chicken allergy !
What we mean by a GOOD NAME is relentless marketing.... that's all🙄 the vaccines will also be in the pet food the same as it is coming to our food...😓 soooooo sad.....
I never had a cat or dog live longer than 9 years - because I dutifully fed Purina kibble, used flea collars and drops, gave tap water to drink, and got them every annual vaccine. I wised up about commercial pet food, flea chemicals, fluoridated water and vet vaccines about twenty-five years ago. We've had our current cat Stanley for 17 years on a mostly raw diet with unfluoridated drinking water. He still has all his teeth, healthy gums and and soft shiny coat. And good kidneys. He is rarely troubled by fleas, they don't seem to like him. What a difference compared to my other pets' miserable health histories. He has had only one vaccine, for rabies, required by law here.
Mine will get 1 rabies vax and I lie to vet about the outdoors - yard only but still goes out. The 1 vax for rabies is required by state laws and it covers her 3 years. I will do no other vaxes. The other cats health deteriorated with all the jabs they got. And as food FOOD mind you, I feed the best brands (expensivo) raw kibble from New Zealand Kiwi and yes some people food. If they do not/will not eat a batch of food, I get rid of it, and find something they will eat. In a pinch I have human quality freeze dried chicken and beef for them. Also freeze dried organic steak LOL. All for the babies. I also went to filtered or distilled AND filter water hence no fluorides in the water and no tap water. I drink the same. The cat who had kidney issues seems to be stabilized she's nearly 17 so if I work hard at it I can maybe prevent that out come for her.. get her to 19 is the goal. Good genes, good food and water, limited medicines and jabs and dewormers like IVM only 1x a year NO topical flea treatments - only comb offs and essential oils. Baths on occasion. That and keep house vacuumed and bedding washed regular.
My dog was on a raw diet and she loved it. My cat is on human grade chicken but he does eat dry, he has had no symptoms of sickness. I am thinking of switching him to raw though, it will make him happy and he's spoiled rotten now.
I am like you…feed ‘Small Batch raw’ to my cat (his favorite is rabbit but it’s way too $$$), and kibble…a better brand (not Purina) but still not good…the kibble is like ‘crack’ for him…he inhales it. He is an indoor outdoor cat, is a ‘hunter’, though not as much now that he’s getting to be a bit ‘older’. He seems healthy and his coat is shiny and nice.
Frontera, I just bought a bag of raw rabbit sliders and didn’t realize how much more expensive it is. Just wanted to give her something different besides turkey and chicken. She is 17 now and is not slowing down one bit. She still jumps as high as she did when she was 2-4 years old. Strangely, after her mate passed away 6 mo ago, she has had much more energy than she ever has in her whole life.
Yes I bought those rabbit sliders too, as they were out of the turkey and chicken…Whoo wee! Dems some expensive bunny food! More expensive per pound than grass fed beef at the market!
The animals have been the Canary in the coal mine for years. And no one paid attention. The Vets just kept pushing the deathly vaccines and garbage food. The ones who spoke the truth were threatened and ridiculed.
Thank you so much for all you do. It can't be easy focusing on all this stuff. Thank you for helping to tip the scales in the direction of being aware!! Take care and all the best to you........................bc
Lucky lucky! I bet they're smarter than the other cats, aren't they? As long as they don't start outsmarting you, but then again they're cats, so they probably already think they're superior (:
They … I keep saying they, but one passed away 6 mo ago so only have one now also 17 yrs. They outsmarted me the day they stepped foot in my home! I’m the lucky one.
I'm so sorry about the loss of your kitty. I know all too well how hard that is. I'm going to get some sardines next time I buy groceries and see how my 2 cats like them. If they don't eat them, I will!
Thank you Pepper. I was not prepared for the grief in addition to watching my other sweet fur baby’s grief. They were inseparable their whole lives together, but she’s recovered and she has become very talkative and dramatic in her ways. She was always very delicate like a little princess with little whisper meows. I wonder if she’s now identifying as a boy 😆🤣😆
My husband and I didn't want children, so we've had many, many cats instead. Every one we've lost has devastated me, but another one soon comes along (always a stray) that we adopt, and helps heal the pain. I'm glad you're other baby is doing well now. That's hilarious about her identifying as a boy!
Sardines are excellent for the health of humans and cats, and one thing i recently learned is that they contain a lot of Vitamin D, which they need for optimal bone health. Cats don't synthesize Vitamin D from the skin like us, they must get it from their food, and sardines are therefore an excellent source of Vit D for them.
Marty, thank you for informing me. I didn’t know they don’t synthesize VitD like humans. This is why I love reading all the comments. I learn so much. Sometimes I am concerned about the mercury. I do buy the Safe Catch brand, but one never knows. I’ve become less trusting in my goddess years 😉
You're welcome. You're right to be concerned about mercury when feeding fish to cats. However, sardines are small fish and contain very low amounts of mercury, quoting an article here:
"4. Sardines' Mercury Content Is Low
Mercury is a heavy metal found in the form of methyl mercury in fish in varying amounts. The mercury originates from many sources, including the natural environment such as volcanic activity, or from pollutants from industrial activities. Large predator fish that are at the top of the food chain typically contain the highest levels of mercury accumulation.
Sardines are one of the best fish choices lowest in methyl mercury content, per the FDA. The reason is that sardines are small and only eat plankton and not mercury-contaminated fish. They are short-lived, so mercury does not have time to build up in their flesh."
Marty, thank you again for the info. Appreciate the link. I make a simple sardine salsa which goes great with chips or crackers - finely chop: sardines, red onions, green olives, garlic, tomatoes, cilantro and fresh lemon or lime juice. Note ~ That’s a recipe for humans, not cats 😄
I met a British woman several years ago when I had one of our Labradors with us and she was commenting how much Daisy reminded her of the dog she had when her children were growing up. She said the dog lived to be 23 year old. The first thing I said was "what did you feed her?" She replied that the dog ate exactly what they did and that she especially loved spaghetti. So amazing! Crazy how brainwashed we all are or were. Love this little corner of the world! ♥
Yup. I feed higher 'organic' dry chow of lamb and rabbit. No grains, no colors dyes fats, etc. OTH the cats love the 'junk food dry stuff' it is like potato chips to them. Still make em eat the good stuff. Organic high end canned stuff like merritt, arcana, kiwi lamb New Zeland, Orijens... freeze dry beef and chicken of human grade and sometimes I feed organic free range chicken from a farm that is healthy. I give them probiotic for cats as well. And I use fenben and ivm when needed. The vets won't give me the Drontal for tapeworm though, just that topical *hit that doesn't work.... I order some from Australia and am giving that. Go figure.
Try Dr. Harvey's. His company sells a base mix (dehydrated vegetables, herbs, and spices) that you rehydrate and mix with a good oil and fresh meat. Lots of different base mixes as well as decent treats.
I appreciate you shedding light on this concerning issue. The well-being of our furry friends is something we should all be deeply concerned about. It's alarming to think that some pet foods might contain harmful ingredients that could jeopardize our pets' health.
The call to feed our pets real food is a valid and important one. After all, our pets are like family, and we should prioritize their nutrition and health just as we do for ourselves. Kudos to you for bringing attention to this matter. Let's hope for safer and healthier options for our beloved pets. 🐾🐶🐱

Thank you. This is what my mother believed, refusing to feed the family dog "non-family" (meaning pet food). He didn't eat scraps. He ate with the rest of us. Always plenty for him. (I've had to learn more - as I've done way less coking, have carnivore cats and have long been vegetarian.)

unfortunately even for human it is very hard to find decent food. Like digging in a hay stack for a needle
Not saying it was, but I always felt it was a better brand before Nestle bought it.
you are most probably right. When Big buys it up the quality usually goes into the ditch !
Feed raw! Prey model. Its not inexpensive but my puppy is worth it! .

My wife was buying chicken breasts at Walmart for years which I would slice and she would dry in the oven for a morning treat.
They all 3 refused to eat the last human grade bag she bought.
Oooh, if the animals won't eat it, it's not safe to eat.

Sometimes "petfood" like sardines is the healthiest both human and animal alike can eat:
https://romanshapoval.substack.com/p/babybrains
Yes. I’ve been feeding my cats sardines 2-3x/wk as a treat.
Lucky lucky! I bet they're smarter than the other cats, aren't they? As long as they don't start outsmarting you, but then again they're cats, so they probably already think they're superior (:

I do the same thing. I'm sorry for your loss.

good lord i have never fed my dog that stuff. or 99% of the 'treats' they sell. she gets the good stuff and is super healthy because of it.

If I wouldn't eat it...
Why would I give it to my offspring or the furry beings I care for?
That stuff... just STINKS when one opens the bag... no matter what...
If it looks like Shizzle
Smells like Shizzle
Is Greasy gross and comes out of the animal looking like Shizzle....
It's shizzle!

Not surprising at all.
Right and just like Gerber baby food. Try Blue Buffalo, and others: https://duckduckgo.com/?q=real+food+pet+food&t=brave&ia=web Just don't buy anything from Chewy as they are woke and will go broke!
LOL i just searched for buffalo on duckduck and the top hits for it were from chewy
FYI, Gerber baby food is owned by Nestle. Purina pet food is owned by Nestle.

cooked rice and ground beef raw was what my French friends feed their GSD. Very healthy stuff. Vishnu lived a very long dog life.
