thanks for the movie (rod serling last time around was great too!) sublime music even if the film errs on the side of brevity. i can't think of another composer whose work is more apropos to our time. he stared down stalin and then spat on his grave.
Am a huge classical music fan and Shostakovich has long been one of my favorite composers along with Mozart, Beethoven, Bach and Tchaikovsky. Thank you for this wonderful music documentary recommendation. Creative performing arts is the best part of being human and the thing the globalist predator technocrat megalomaniac total slavery control freaks most want to destroy.
Watching it first thing in the morning. I know nothing about him beyond his name, a sense of his stature and what you wrote. Always want to know about artists who go the distance and let nothing get in the way of the work involved in developing and bringing forth their art with its capacity to elevate the spirit and uplift those who can receive it. Never an easy path.
What's not to like?... I'd love to watch this! ...BSO (Boston Symphony Orch) had this to say about one of my most fave symphonies: "More has been written and said about the Symphony No. 5 of Dmitri Shostakovich than about any other single symphony composed in the 20th century."--more here: https://www.bso.org/works/symphony-no-5-shostakovich
been listening a lot to the andris nelsons/bso recording of shostakovich symphonies 1, 14 and 15 plus the chamber symphony (the string orchestra version of his self-penned requiem, string quartet no. 8) that's worth hearing. very hi-res detail - i despise spotify but couldn't find this anywhere else https://open.spotify.com/album/3Q5X5BAu6vAGTfJoUnUrX8
I am amazed myself. Across the street from where I work, there is one of several DC institutes that focus on Russia and have public lectures daily. Why is there so much interest? I thought China was the main rival. https://www.wilsoncenter.org/program/kennan-institute
Celia, how wonderful of you to post this for us... fine music is resurrection for the soul...Saturday nite, thank you so much!

the endless desolation of symphony no. 11 helped get me through 2020. https://open.spotify.com/album/3jATsKGghPCNB1wUrGGgr6

Much of this essay, proposing peace with Russia, highlights the art of Shostakovich.

I wrote the Global Research piece about John McCain meeting with the leaders of ISIS.
Here's my favorite piece of music written by Shostakovich. Symphony #8, 3rd Movement. Highly original. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bhcw41fOdEY
Shostakovich was a genius.
Thanks for the recommendation Celia: that documentary was an absolute gem. (It contrasts hilariously with our low-brow choice for our guests tonight)!
Here's my contribution - "Finding Joy Among the Skullduggery".

How do you know so much about Russian culture?
I don't! But I'm interested. Tonight I was all over the map, before settling on this.
Are you Russian Sonja?
I am Serbian, but I learned Russian after I moved to the US, in Washington, DC, as I found the city to be obsessed with Russia.
To learn another language in response to arriving in America? That's SO remarkable!

It is remarkable. And so is being Serbian!
Can’t find the movie.
Roslyn let me know if you were able to access it via the words "Watch on YouTube" in the frame. Hope so!
I could not access it... but am super excited to see it if it’s one I haven’t seen. Thank you,
I just realized the subject is the title of the film. I was searching for The Dissident.
Click on the words "Watch on YouTube" in the frame.
Thank you. My young nephews play the piano so naturally I shared the film with their mother.
Arrived at this on Sunday morning. Maybe to be watched tonight. Thank you.
Thank you. Always looking for film recommendations.
Thank you, Celia, I cannot wait to watch this.
